Abstract

Cubanite was found microscopically in the cupriferous pyrrhotite ores from the Akagane contact metasomatic deposit, Iwate Prefecture. The ore minerals of the deposit are pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, magnetite, pyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, cubanite, a Cu-Bi mineral and some supergene minerals. The skarn and gangue minerals are diopside, hedenbergite, garnet, dark green hornblende, chlorite, epidote, calcite, quartz and hisingerite. Cubanite is nearly always intimately associated with chalcopyrite or pyrrhotite as orientated intergrowth such as {001} of cubanite lies parallel to {111} of chalcopyrite, due to an exsolution of solid solution between cubanite and chalcopyrite or pyrrhotite. But sometimes irregular shaped cubanite is seen which is not an exsolution product. On the other hand, very small curving hair like or vermicule shaped pyrrhotite was seen in chalcopyrite which is also considered to have resulted from an exsolusion phenomena.
