Abstract

The effects of olfactory stimulation and gustatory stimulation of singer (Zincebris rhizoma) solution on the efferent activity of the gastric branch of the vagus nerve and the adrenal branch of the sympathetic nerve were observed in the anesthetized rat. The olfactory as well as gustatory stimulation with ginger solution in concentration with 50 mg/ml for 10 min resulted in an activation of the vagal Gastric nerve activity, and demonstrated a suppression in the adrenal nerve activity. Further, the response is dose related. Olfactory and gustatory stimulation of ginger solution (10 mg/ml, 10min) for 10 min caused a smaller response and stimulation with thinner ginger solution (1 mg/ml, 10 min) was without effect. These observations suggest that olfactory as well as gustatory stimulation of ginger solution (50 mg/ml, 10 min) activates gastro-intestinal function, and reduces adrenaline secretion from the adrenal medulla, through reflex modulation of autonomic outflow.
