Dental implant material became divided into dirrerent groups of biocompatibi1ity by the bone tissue reaction. By animal experiments and human specimen it could be shown that a direct bonc-contact to the implant surface is not depending on the biochemical but from the biochemical stabi1ity during the healing period. The direct bone contact to the implant surface is no osteointegration, it is, however, part of the foreign body reaction in the bone tissue. In contrast to the foreign body is surrounded by collagen (fibrous capsule), no complete bone contact is be seen around implants. The inner part of the supracrestal connective tissue around implants corresponds with a scar of soft tissue, which means the co11agen contains less vessels. The supracrestal connective tissue is not comparable with the gingival connective tissue (oriented fibers, blood supply). The mucosal membrane which forms a seal around implants is gingiva-1ike.
