Abstract

In order to clarify the cytological features of angiomyolipoma of the kidney, we observed touch or scraped preparations from five histologically confirmed cases. In every case, there were many tissue fragments containing smooth muscle, blood vessels and adipose tissue. Smooth muscle cells showed less cohesiveness than normal cells. The smooth muscle cells in case 2 and case 4 contained acidophilic fibrillar or rod-shaped material in their cytoplasm. Electronmicroscopy demonstrated that the material consisted of myofibrils. The fat vacuoles of odipose cells varied in size, and some nuclei displayed intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions. Endothelial cells exhibited “coffee-bean nuclei”. In addition, naked round nuclei with granular chromatin and prominent nucleoli, mimicking renal cell carcinoma, and large atypical cells with hyperchromasia, mimicking some kind of sarcoma, were observed in two cases and three cases, respectively. Regular distribution of chromatin and the absence of parachromatin clearing in angiomyolipoma are useful in differentiating it from a malignant tumor.
