Abstract

A questionnaire study of 118 patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI) revealed that there were a number of problems in their rehabilitation. There were 54 tetraplegic patients and 64 paraplegic ones. There were 89 men and 29 women. In SCI patients, 68 of them were diagnosed Frankel A, 37 were B, 1 was C, and 12 were D. Their average age was 45.8 years (range, 22 to 81 years)and their average life span after injury was 12.6 years (range, 2 to 33 years). 87 per cent of all patients have lived at home after discharge. 41 per cent needed any assistance in basic activities of daily living, and only a half of all patients were independent of activities of daily living. 86 per cent of all helpers were their spouses, parents and children. 65 per cent of all helpers aged more than 50 years. 46 per cent of all patients rehospitalized after discharge and 61 per cent regurarly attended to the hospital. The utilization of social welfare services was only 19 per cent, which was much lower than we expected. It was necessary for 72 per cent of the patients to extend or rebuild partially their houses. 73 per cent had driver's licences. Among the patients who had driver's licences, about a half of paraplegics and two thirds of tetraplegics received their licences after injury. 51 per cent of the patients had their spouses and 11 per cent got married, although 11 per cent were divorced after injury. Their employment rate was 41 per cent. As a result, this study showed that the existence of helpers, the reconstruction of houses, the ability to drive, the existence of spouses and the employment had significant influences on the rehabilitation of SCI patients in addition to the level of paralysis and the age.
