This paper is about Hara Sankei(原三渓1867-1939), a wealthy silk trader from Yokohama who was not only a wellknown  collector of art but also one of the few patrons of Japanese modern art. Moreover, he is also known panicularily as apatron of血麺血(日本美術院), the Japan Art lnstitute.  The art historical studies of Sankei have made rapid progress because of athe discovery of some new documents written by Sankei himself including the record-(美術品買入覚), which is a precise compilation of his art collection that belongs now to the Sankeien Hoshokai Foundation(三漢園保勝会).  In a previous paper I already analyzed the collection of old and modern japanese art by Sankei based on these newly discovered documents(×).   In this paper 1 will focus on Sankei’s patronage of japanese modern artists and wou1.d like to underline that he was their leadig patron. Moreover, I will discuss the reasons why and how the market for遡(EI・本画), Japanese modern paintings, broadend that time.
