The machinability of beta-titanium alloy (Ti-3Al-8V-6Cr-4Mo-4Zr) was evaluated in turning tests with carbide tool K 10. Cutting temperature, cutting force, tool wear and tool life were researched in comparison with those of Ti-6A1-4V. Further, tool geometories, tool material, cutting fluid and tool path were discussed to improve the tool life. The results obtained were as follows ; In spite of lower cutting temperature than that of Ti-6Al-4V, the machinability of Ti-3Al-8V-6Cr-4Mo-4Zr was very poor. In machining of beta-titanium alloy, the tool lives of carbide tools were about 1/2 to 1/10 of those in machining of Ti-6Al-4V because of the very heavy adhesion of the work material on the cutting edge. However, it was possible to improve the tool life considerably by devising the tool geometries and the tool path.
