A new butt joining method of ceramics by microwave heating was developed. This method utilizes the dielectric property of ceramics that the loss factor rapidly increases with the temperature rise. The microwave joining has such advantages as a high joint strength achieved by internal heating, and a rapid and local heating under precise temperature control. The heating was done in a rectangular cavity connected to a microwave power source of maximum 3 kW at 6 GHz. The heating system controlled by the iris, plunger and microwave power was newly developed. As a result, alumina rod could be heated efficiently and stably at any desired rate. The microwave joining of alumina without adhesives was possible by the use of this system. The bending strength of the joined alumina (92% purity) was 420 MPa, and equivalent to the original strength. The microwave joining was conducted by the preferential heating and melting of the grain boundary phase without melting alumina particles.
