By using touch smear preparation on gastric biopsy specimens on 176 positive cases of Helicobacter pylori (hereinafter called “HP”), cytologic findings were studied in relation to clinical diagnosis, histologic diagnosis and the distribution of age. The ratio of HP recognition according to age was examined on the cultivation of bacteria sample from 126 cases. The results were compared with 91 cases by cellular diagnosis and germiculture. In addition, the localization of HP existence was observed by using tissue preparation on biopsy specimens. The following results were obtained:<BR>1. The distribution of age and the ratio of HP recognition according to age on the positive HP cases were the largest in the forties.<BR>2. The ratio of HP detection through the cytodiagnosis was 53.8%, which was almost as high as that of 51.6% through the germiculture. The ratio of coincidence was 80.2%.<BR>3. The most of clinical and tissue diagnosis on the positive HP cases was gastritis (60.8% and 73.3% respectively).<BR>4. The localization of HP existence was observed in the tissue specimens at the surface of cryptoepithelium cells and in the clearance between the cells.<BR>5. HP was recognized as a light-green positive thin spiral organism on the touch smear preparation.<BR>6. The abnormal epithelial cells recognized in the positive HP specimens consisted of hyperplastic cells in epithelial surface, intestinal metaplastic cells and tissue repair cells.<BR>7. In the ratio of abnormal epithelial cell development according to age, more than 80% of the hyperplastic cells were recognized at all ages and intestinal metaplastic cells were increased as the age advanced.<BR>8. As the result through the touch smear preparation, it was found that the cytologic findings of HP infection were the increase in leukocyte, the existence of spiral organism, and the development of hyperplastic cells.
