Liquid crystalline and optical properties of four dicholesteryl derivatives having various linkage configurations, while the same number of connecting carbons (18) have been investigated, using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy, Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-VIS spectroscopy. Quite different phase behavior and optical properties have been found for each of those compounds, while all of them exhibited behavior, specific for a cholesteric phase. It was difficult, however possible to fix stable, various colors for one compound with linking (CH_2)_<18> alkyl chain. It was much easier to fix less stable colors for samples with linking (CH_2)_6 and the C=C double bonds between them. Very unstable colors could also be fixed for the compound with the (CH_2)_7 alkyl chains and diyne group. The fourth compound with side alkyl chain being in eholesteric phase showed colors at room temperature. FTIR spectroscopy measurements provided interesting results concerning average molecular configuration change between blue cholesteric solid and crystal, for the compound with the (CH_2)_7 alkyl chains which crystallized within a few hours, also frequency changes of some bands were found and reported. As one could expect, and as it has been found using the DSC and Polarizing Microscopy, the linkages of the same number of carbons, while having different configurations provide absolutely different optical properties and transition temperatures.
