The liquid crystalline compounds consisting of two cholesteryl and one phenoxy groups connected by methylene units were synthesized. This compound in its choresteric phase shows typical reflex colors ranging from blue to red depending on the temperature. When the compound showing the reflex colors was quickly cooled down to 0℃, it solidified while keeping the reflex color. Cholesteric glass put between glass plates after the rapid cooling process showed transmission spectra with the wavelength of the peak ranging from 440nm to 640nm. It showed narrow spectral band and about 50% of reflectivity. Relationship between temperature at which rapid cooling started and wavelength of the peaks in the transmission band for the cholesteric films showed that the peak of the reflection bands shifted to longer wavelength as the temperature is raised. The solid sample with colors can be solidified again with the different colors if it is rapidly cooled after it is heated to cholesteric phase.
