Two kinds of sewage sludge composts have been applied to the fields of volcanic ash soil (Andosol) at the Experimental Farm of The University of Tokyo, twice a year for 17 years since 1978 in order to grow corn (Zea mays L.) in summer and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in winter. 1) The average concentrations of Zn and Cu in H compost (a compost of sewage sludge mixed with rice husks) were 628 mg kg^<-1> and 112 mg kg^<-1>, respectively, while those of S compost (a compost of sewage sludge mixed with sawdust) were 606 mg of Zn per kg and 184 mg of Cu per kg. 2) Long-term application of sewage sludge compost increased the concentration of Zn in the surface soil layer (0-10 cm depth) of the sewage sludge amended field and caused Zn transfer from the surface soil down to the middle soil layer (10-20 cm depth). 3) Most of the Zn applied to the soil has remained in both surface and middle soil layers. 4) Most of Zn added to the soil with sewage sludge application was retained in the surface soil layer for at least 13 years after stopping the sewage sludge application, although a slight decrease in Zn concentration of the surface soil layer has been noticed very recently. 5) The concentration of total Cu in the surface soil layer of the H and S plots was slightly higher than that of the F plot. However, the degree of this accumulation was less than that of Zn since the concentration of Cu in the sewage sludge was not so much greater compared with that of the original soil.
