The Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self Report (PAIS-SR), which was developed by Derogatis LR et al., is a self-evaluating method of psychosocial adjustment under various diseased conditions. I created a Japanese version of PAIS-SR. After confirming the reliability and validity of the Japanese PAIS-SR, I used it in patients after stroke to establish the relationship between PAIS-SR scores and the laterality of brain damage. As a result, significantly higher scores were found on 2 items, “Self-devaluation” in the region of “Psychological Distress” and “Sexual interest” in the region of “Sexual Relationship”, in patients with left brain damage. With time after stroke, changes in the score tended to occur more frequently in patients with left brain damage than in those with right brain damage. From the viewpoint of psychosocial adjustment, it was suggested that patients with right brain damage are rather unconcerned about their disability and those with left brain damage tend to improve the recognition of their disability with time.
