In order to examine the ABA biosynthetic pathway, epoxides of vitamin A (all-trans-retinol) and two derivatives were tested about their ABA like physiological activity using the etiolated Alaska pea seedling. The epicotyl length and its fresh weight were measured. 5,6-epoxy-retinoic acid and 5,6-epoxy retinol treatment inhibited the epicotyl growth like ABA. The inhibited effect was recovered by treatment with combination of GA_3 as in the case of ABA. In conclusion, the present results suggest the possibility that 5,6-epoxy-retinoic acid and 5,6-epoxy retinol may be the precursor of ABA. Methyl 5,6-epoxy-retinoate should be studied further.
