Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present the recent trends in historical sociology of education. Related books and articles published in the past 5 years are reviewed. These studies are classified into 6 groups, namely studies on (1) structure and function of educational institutions, (2) teachers, children, and families, (3) elite and professions, (4) policy, (5) discourse and culture, and (6) educational credentialism and social classes. Major findings are as follows : Firstly, diversification in subjects and methods of studies are observed. Especially in studies on educational credentialism and social classes, new approaches are being developed and adopted. Also discourse analysis is a new trend in recent years. Secondly, fewer studies are based on a macroscopic sociological theory. Scopes and frameworks of recent studies are often microscopic. Thirdly, the boundary line between, historical sociology of education and history of education has become less distinct. Some of the studies in history of education have begun to use sociological concepts and frameworks.
