Abstract
Post-war developments in the Japanese historical studies of education are divided into three periods : the 1950's, the 1960's-70's, and the 1980's-90's. In the 1950s, strongly influenced by Marxism, researchers attempted to understand the historical and structural determinants of educational phenomena. In the 1960's, modernization theory which opposed Marxism led us to analyze the historical roles of education in the processes of economic development. In the 1980's and 90's, the Western orientation of modernization theory has been criticized, and the post modern social history has influenced the current historical studies of education. Reflecting the trend, I would like to ask what is the practical value. I strongly expect that our historical studies lead us to develop both interpretative and critical abilities of contemporary education.
