The optimum growth conditions of long K2Ti4O9 fibers were investigated by the slow cooling method in a temperature field from 1200°C to 850°C using a K2MoO4 flux. When starting fiber compositions are represented by the formula (K2O)x⋅TiO2, the formation of only K2Ti4O9 phase was depended upon starting composition and reaction temperature, and the fibers were synthesized at the temperature of 1150°C or below with x=1/4, at the temperature of 1200°C or below with x=1/3. The best growth of long fibers was carried out by slow cooling from 1150°C with x=1/4.<br>Flux reactions were analyzed by DTA, TG and quenching method employed Pt crucibles, and a new flux growth reaction of the K2Ti4O9 fibers was found. The reaction was abided by a dissociation-association reaction, 2K2Ti6O13(s)+K2O(l)→←3K2Ti4O9(s), rather than the general dissolution-recrystallization reaction. Although the dissociation reaction of K2Ti4O9 phase is predominant at the higher temperatures, the association reaction of K2Ti6O13 with K2O becomes predominant at the lower temperatures. When the association reaction was promoted by slow cooling from the higher temperatures, the growth of K2Ti4O9 fibers was markedly performed.
