Gosu in Seto group was studied mainly by X-ray diffractometry, analytical electron microscopy (AEM), chemical analysis, IR and DTA. Gosu consists of three crystalline phases; quartz, halloysite and lithiopholite. The results of electron microscopy and AEM showed that lithiopholite in Gosu has a plate-like shape diameter of about 4μm, and contains following metal elements; Mn (1.0), Al (0.4), Co (0.13), and Ni (0.05) (normalized in such a way that Mn-content=1). Chemical analysis showed that Gosu contains Mn (1.0), Al (0.67-0.75), Li (0.16-0.22), Co (0.11-0.58), Ni (0.20-0.22). Lithiopholite in Gosu is characterized by large amounts of Li, Al and Co ions compared with the average composition of natural lithiopholite. On heating Gosu, decomposition of lithiopholite took place at 420°C and that of halloysite at 520°C. On further heating, a spinel-type oxide and β-spodumene crystallized above 700°C and above 800°C, respectively. The lattice constant of the spinel-type oxide is 8.27Å, corresponding to that of MnAl2O4. Blue color of Gosu after heat treatment is attributed to the tetrahedrally coordinated Co ion which is dissolved in MnAl2O4.
