Abstract
The effect on cavitation phenomena of unsteadiness of oil flow through sharp-edged orifices was investigated. The rate of pressure difference across the orifice was kept at constant value, and cavitation incipience and desinence were recorded by using scattered laser beams. As a result, the following were obtained: 1. There exist two types of cavitation, namely, gaseous cavitation and vaporous cavitation. 2. Cavitation incipience and desinence vary with the initial condition and the temperature of hydraulic oil, and the time rate of pressure difference. 3. There exists hysteresis between cavitation incipience and desinence, in the case of vaporous cavitation.
