Floating or noncontact positioning of objects has been attempted using sound waves. Ultrasonic levitation has a special advantage in that any substance can be levitated. However, in conventional ultrasonic levitation, only light objects weighing a few milligrams can be levitated, which prevents the use of ultrasonic levitation for most practical purposes. Recently, it has been demonstrated through experiments that objects weighing a few kilograms can be stably levitated near the vibrating surface. In this paper, the radiation pressure of sound in the thin layer of air between the vibrating surface and the levitated objects is analyzed. A proposed mechanism of the ultrasonic levitation near the vibrating surface is also presented.
