An error analysis for the hot-wire/film measurement in wall turbulence was performed using a direct numerical simulation (DNS) data base of the two-dimensional turbulent channel flow. Fairly complete models of single and dual sensor probes were considered. The effects of spatial resolution as well as that of the neglected velocity components were estimated quantitatively. It is concluded that sensor spacing has dominant effects on the measured values; near the wall, the wall-normal and spanwise turbulent intensities are overestimated considerably, while the streamwise one is slightly underestimated. These results are confirmed experimentally by physical measurement with an X-shaped fiber probe in a two-dimensional water channel.
