Great attention has recently been paid to pumps driven by variable speed motors with thyristor inverters with the idea of reducing power consumption. When such devices are applied to long piping systems, it is important to predict the dynamic characteristics of piping and control systems. From this point of view, dynamic characteristic of a simple piping system in which pressure is controlled by pumps driven by variable speed motors with thyristor inverters is studied. Nondimensional parameters which govern the problem are clarified by nondimensionalizing the governing equations, and the equations are solved numerically using the characteristics method. The results of analysis show that the pressure is satisfactorily controlled by a feedback control system using a PI controller and a two-step method of changing pump start-up speed is quite effective in reducing pressure fluctuations as the number of pumps in operation increases. The measurement at a refueling piping system in an airport is also carried out and the analytical results agree with the measured data.
