This paper shows the experimental and theoretical study on the stability of the bearing, examining the effect of preload factor, load direction. The unstable vibration of the bearing grows above the threshold speeds, and the mode shape is conical. The stability threshold speeds in the case of LOP are higher than that in the case of LBP. A theoretical study is conducted with the full set of rotordynamic coefficients not only for the translational motions but also for the conical. The theoretical stability threshold speeds agree with the measurements. The conical mode vibration becomes unstable at much lower shaft speeds compared with the translational one.
