The present authors have studied effects of differences in the shell theories upon the optimal solutions which maximize the lowest eigenvalues for vibration and buckling of laminated cylindrical shells. The cylindrical shells have symmetric laminated construction and are supported by shear diaphragms at both ends. In the past studies, the shell theories have been applied separately : the Flugge theory, Love theory and Donnell theory, and are used to obtain approximate solutions for the frequency and buckling parameters of the angle-ply shells. In the present report, a new approach is introduced to deal with those different shell theories under unified formulation.
