Abstract

We study rotary motions in a damped pendulum subjected to periodically varying torque. Using a Melinikov-type technique and the averaging method, we detect the occurrence of quasiperiodic rotations constructing a stable invariant torus in nonresonance and resonance domains. We also show that in the resonance zones there are narrow regions with exponentially small upper bounds in which the stable and unstable manifolds of periodic rotary orbits intersect. Moreover, we give direct numerical analyses to demonstrate the theoretical results.
