While contact rotating systems are operating, periodic polygonal deformation patterns are often formed on the peripheral surfaces of rolls due to viscoelastic deformation, plastic deformation, cutting, grinding, wear and so on. Such phenomena are caused by the unstable vibration generated in the time delay system. In this report, the authors suggest a simplified method to estimate the intensity of instability of such systems by using energy factor, which is derived from the modal parameters. The validity of the present method is confirmed from the numerical computational results.
