The authors present a new evolutionary optimization method for structural dynamics and statics. This method finds the optimum shapes of structural components for dynamic and/or static loads. The method optimizes the topology of the shapes and from a simple and small initial structure using identical finite elements. The surface of the structure is covered with a layer of the virtual finite elements. The deformation of the model by applying external loads is computed with the finite element analysis. Then, according to an algorithm developed based on modal analysis, some of the virtual elements will change to real elements, and some real elements will be deleted. This computational process is iterated. In order to demonstrate the usefulness of the method, the optimization of 2-D and 3-D structures with static loads and of 2-D structure with dynamic loads are carried out.
