A stability analysis method of a flexible belt supported by airflow on a trough is presented to investigate the belt-flutter phenomenon (self-excited oscillations) of a roller-less belt conveyor system. The behavior of a belt is described by the beam theory and the fluid-dynamic force acting on the belt is represented by the leakage-flow theory of a one-dimensional narrow passage, which is decided by the belt deformation. Basic equations are derived, and numerically solved, so that static deformation shapes of the belt, frequencies and mode shapes of the belt-flutter and critical airflow are obtained. An experiment was conducted using the element model of a conveyor line. A good agreement was found between analytical and experimental results.
