An optimal design approach is proposed for maximizing the fundamental frequency of free flexural vibration of thick rectangular plates with varying thickness. The plate analysis is based on the first order shear deformation theory, and a frequency equation is derived by using a method of Ritz for arbitrary sets of classical boundary conditions. In numerical examples, the thickness variation is assumed to be linear in one direction, and the taper ratio is used as a design variable to maximize the frequency under the constraint condition of the constant plate volume. It was found that there exist optimal solutions for the taper ratio that depend upon the boundary conditions of the rectangular plates.
