Weigh in Motion Systems (WIMs) are used to determine truck axle loads while the vehicles remain in motion. Rather than obtaining directly the truck weight, the measurement system determines the transient interaction force between the scale and the truck. In this paper, we present a recently developed Intelligent Highway Monitoring system (IHMs) for vehicle weight identification. The system is tested on actual experimental data to identify the weight of a loaded truck (total weight, 8.7 tons) at speeds 0-50 km/h. A maximum average identification error of less than 5.3% is obtained. The system error may further be reduced by considering traveling load effects and the effect of initial conditions as the truck mounts the scale. These aspects are discussed in the paper.
