This paper proposes a new technique of improving damping property and regenerative efficiency of an energy regenerative damper. Normally an energy regenerative damper can regenerate vibration energy only at high speed motion. But for low speed motion the damper has nonlinear characteristics with dead zone. Hence the energy is not regenerated nor it has damping force. In order to overcome this problem, a step-up chopper is introduced between the acutator and the charging circuit. The chopper is controlled by the velocity dependent PWM to improve the efficiency of the regenerative damper. Then the damper can change its damping coefficient and the energy can be regenerated more efficiently. The results are showing better performance than the previous regenerative damper.
