Synergy pattern transitions in human locomotion learning were identified by kinematically quantifying the degree of synergy between the arm and leg of a person walking backward on a treadmill with eyes closed as an example of inexperienced motion. In order to calculate joint angles time-series of the shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle, a motion capture system was used to measure 2-dimensional coordinates of the leg landmarks during the backward walking. The cross correlation coefficient for joint angle time-series data between the shoulder and hip increased significantly as trials progressed, perhaps indicating that shoulder flexion is synchronized with hip extension in locomotion learning. The correlation dimensions (an index for estimating the degree of freedom in the dynamic system represented by each attractor) of joint motion attractors decreased significantly in the shoulder and ankle as trials progressed, indicating that the degree of freedom in these joint motions decreased as learning progressed. Thus, motion synergy between the shoulder and hip appears to exist in the locomotion used. Synergy appears to increase with locomotion learning as the degree of freedom in shoulder joint motion decreased.
