In this article, presented is an overview of our research work on the development of topology optimization methodology for applications to designing smart materials based devices, hard disk drive suspensions and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). First, topology optimization method was applied systematically to design mechanical amplifiers that magnify the limited actuation stroke of piezoelectric actuator. Subsequently, it is explored to make use of topological optimization to systematically and optimally design suspension arm for hard disk drives (HDD), which has different design requirements from those of the stiffest dynamic structures. Finally, topology optimization method is shown to be especially suitable for optimal design of micro mechanisms and structures used in MEMS.
