The major concern of this work is to investigate the cause of diversity of the available experimental and numerical data of the decay process of round jets. For this end, a simulation of a round jet has been carried out with a newly designed scheme. The spatial discretization of the convective term includes 6th-order artificial viscosity to limit the modulation in only small scale eddies. The streamsize vortices lying in braid region between ring vortices have non-uniform separation in the azimuthal direction. Global instability analysis of a temporary developing jet indicates that the different kinds of random disturbance results in the different temporal development of azimuthal modes. This suggests the lack of dominant mode, but the ample receptivity for various modes in the secondary instability of the shear layer, which may cause the diversity of jet evolution.
