Abstract
The distribution of the thermal residual stresses near the interface of Al_2O_3/Cu joints was studied by finite element analyses. The results show that the mesh size used in the finite-element model has a significant influence on the calculated stress distribution because of the stress singularity. They also show that the meshes in the singular stress dominated region must be less than 25 μm at least in order to obtain a converged stress distribution. In addition, an analysis on the relation between the joint structure and the residual stress shows that an optimum design of the joint structure can decrease the singular residual stress and significantly improve the strength of the joints.
