Abstract
Rotational bending fatigue tests were carried out on medium carbon steel (S35C) with a coating of thermally sprayed Ni-based self-fluxing alloy coating, with special attention focused on the effect of diffusion layer on fatigue properties, which is formed between a coating layer and a substrate in the fusing treatment. Firstly, the fused specimens showed a significantly higher fatigue strength compared with that of a substrate. Secondly, it was found that the fused specimen, which has a thicker diffusion layer by using a re-heating process, showed a lower fatigue strength level. According to the analysis of the residual stress using the triple fold spherical shell model, it was found that the formation of a diffusion layer caused a reduction in compressive residual stress at coating layer.
