助詞ヨリ/カラの主格標示用法について : キリシタン文献を中心として  [in Japanese] The Usage of the Case Particles Yori/kara Indicating the Nominative Case : A Study Mainly Based on Christian Religious Literature  [in Japanese]

Abstract

The case particle yori marks both the ablative case and the nominative case in the Christian religious literature. (The case particle kara was not used at all in the Christian religious literature, and kara used in other literature usually marked the ablative case.) The nominative use of yori was derived from the ablative use that indicated the starting point of movement. The nominative yori was often used as an honorific expression in the Christian religious literature, although it is rarely found in other literature such as the War Chronicles. The following factors were relevant to the development of the nominative yori in the Christian religious literature. l . In the Christian religious literature, the meaning expressed by the particle yori was not restricted to the locative meaning. 2 . Since in the Christian religious literature the honorific expressions required tamafu, and since the passive and honorific auxiliary verb (ra) ru was used solely in passive meaning, the nominative yori, which marked agent in active sentences, could not be mistaken for the ablative yori, which marked agent in passive sentences.
