Large amounts of needle-like crystals were accumulated in the culture broth of a strain isolated from soil and identified as Penicillium spiculisporum Lehman. The precipitated crystals were identified as the open-ring acid (O-acid) of spiculisporic acid (S-acid).The equilibrium reaction between O-and S-acids was proved to be a first-order revensible reaction. At equilibrium at 80 and 100℃, S-acid/O-acid ratios were found to be 5.3 and 7.0,respectively. Solubilities of both acids changed strikingly with temperature. At room temperature, both acids were almost insoluble in water. At higher temperatures, O-acid was more soluble in water than S-acid.
