Abstract

The effedt of carbon dioxide on growth of microorganisms was studies in fed-batch coutures with a constant carbon dioxide concentration in exhaust gas from the fermentor and a constant dissolved oxygen concentration in the broth. Growth of Escherichia coli was not inhibited by 20% carbon dioxide concentration though 17% and 21% growth inhibition was observed at 64% CO_2 concentratoin in complex medium and 62% CO_2 concentration in synthetic medium, respectively. On the other hand, growth inhibition was not observed at all till 61% CO_2 concentration in the case of Candida brassicae.
