Isolation of (1→2)-β-D-Glucans from Tropical Strains of Rhizobium and Determination of Their Degrees of Polymerization :

Abstract

(1→2)-β-D-Glucans were found in the culture filtrates of 11 of the 19 strains of Rhizobium isolated from tropical leguminous plants. The degrees of polymerization (DPs) of the glucans from 5 strains were determined by comparison of their thin-layer and liquid chromatograms with those of standard (1→2)-β-D-glucans obtained from Agrobacterium radiobacter IFO 12665b1 and Rhizobium phaseoli AHU 1133. The glucans produced were a mixture of several components with different DPs and the distribution patterns of DPs varied with the strains : two strains (TISTR 267 and TISTR 309) produced cyclic glucans mainly of DP 17,two strains (TISTR 143 and TISTR 312) produced cyclic glucans mainly with DPs of 21 and 22,and one strain (TISTR 305) produced linear glucans mainly with DPs of 15 to 19. This is the first report of a linear form of (1→2)-β-D-glucan in Rhizobium.
