A FAULT RUPTURE MODEL OF THE 1995 HYOGOKEN NAMBU EARTHQUAKE (M_<JMA> =7.2) ESTIMATED BY THE EMPIRICAL GREEN'S FUNCTION METHOD

A preliminary fault rupture model of the 1995 Hyogoken-nambu earthquake (M_<JMA> =7.2), Japan, was constructed using the empirical Green's function method. The fault rupture plane composed of three subevents was determined from a comparison of the synthetic motions with the observed ones at two stations (Kobe University and Kumatori) close to the source area. The total rupture area is 40 km × 15 km, and the areas of the three subevents are 15 km × 10 km, 7.5 km × 5 km, and 7.5 km × 5 km. The extremely large motions with simple two pulsive waveforms recorded at the Kobe University station were found to be contributions of the second and the third subevents and the directivity effect of the rupture propagation directed to Kobe.
