Abstract

We here propose an inversion method that can be used to analyze the source-rupture process that corresponds to the short-period range which is important in the field of earthquake engineering. This method is based on the idea that the effects of a propagating path and an observation site need not be considered when the record of a small earthquake that has taken place in the same source region as the large earthquake is used as Green's function for the point source. From this, how short-period body waves are generated can be determined. Our method consists of two procedures : Many synthesized waves are produced by trial and error, then the extent of agreement of the synthesized waves with the recorded wave is examined with a special criterion. We have used the inversion procedure to investigate the detailed source-rupture processes of the 1978 Miyagiken-oki (Japan) and 1968 Tokachi-oki (Japan) earthquakes, based on the use of strong motion accelerograms. We have concluded that spatiotemporally the Tokachi-oki earthquake has a very complicated source-rupture process.
