従来のPCのGUIアプリケーションは，そのGUIの複雑さから初心者ユーザでも事前学習なしでタスクを実行できるほど十分には操作手順が明確でないことが多く，ユーザビリティ上の課題の1つとなっている．著者らは，この課題の解決を目的とした2つのGUIシステム「GUIナビゲータ」および「GUIカバー」を開発した．GUIナビゲータは，操作手順を画面上で1ステップずつ誘導する．この誘導は，現在の画面で操作すべきGUI部品（メニュー項目，ボタンなど）の位置検出と，位置検出された同部品の強調表示によって行う．GUIカバーは，アプリケーションのGUI画面を，初心者に適したよりシンプルな別の画面に置換する．これら2システムはいずれも，対象アプリケーションのプログラムを変更することなく適用可能である．これは，GUIアクセシビリティ手法を用いて操作誘導/画面置換機能を実現したためである．実際の初心者ユーザを用いた実験により，本システムの有効性を確認できた．

One of usability problems of the current graphical user interface (GUI) applications on PCs is that, because of the complexity of their GUIs,correct interaction sequences are not clear enough for PC novice users to do their tasks without pre-learning.This paper proposes two GUI systems for solving the problem of the sequence unclearness.The GUI Navigator navigates user-application interactions step-by-step on GUI screens.The Navigator detects where the GUI widget (a menu item, a button, etc.) to be clicked now is shown on the current screen,and visually highlights the detected widget.The GUI Cover replaces applications' original GUI screens with other screens designed for making the applications more usable to novices.Using the GUI Cover, screen simplification for novices can be achieved.The two systems can be applied to any applications without modifying the application programs; interaction navigation and screen replacement functions are achieved independently of application programs by utilizing GUI accessibility methods.Effectiveness of the two systems for novices was confirmed by experimental evaluation with real novice users.
