A new disease of peach (Prunus persica Batsch var. vulgaris Maxim.) causing a sooty appearance on the surface of peach fruits was found in Wakayama and Okayama Prefectures in 1984 and 1985, respectively. Neither necrotic lesion nor fruit rot developed. The fungus consistently isolated from diseased fruit formed gray to dark brown colonies with water droplets on PSA medium. The mycelium was hyaline to pale yellow brown in color with verruculose walls. Conidiophores were usually single and straight, rarely curved, smooth and pale brown in color. The conidia were usually catenate, blastic, 0-5 septate, narrowly obovate to cylindrical, verruculose, and pale yellow brown in color. All four isolates of this fungus were pathogenic on peach fruits. The sooty symptom appeared give length of time here after inoculation on the peach surface. Based on morphologic and pathogenic characteristics, the causal pathogen was identified as a species of the genus Stenella. The common name, fruit mold (‘Susukabibyo’ in Japanese), is proposed for this new disease of peach.
