Addition of iron (100 mg/L or more) to the culture fluid caused a significant depression in carbohydrate consumption, oxygen-uptake, formation of NH_3 and in the other metabolic activities of the organism. Trichomycin yield was markedly decreased as a result of the inevitable inhibition of growth. The influence of iron on growth and production was increasingly remarkable in highly agitatd cultures.Supplying dried yeast to the medium, growth was promoted and considerable amount of the antibiotic was formed even in the presence of iron at such a high concentraion. Results of the several tests indicated the possibility of producing trichomycin with fermentors made of iron by adding dried yeast to the medium under moderately low agitation. The inhibitory effect of iron on the respiration of the organism in the culture fluid was also investigated, and the nature of the effect was discussed.
