The volume fractions of methanol and acetonitrile in the aqueous mobile phase of the reversed-phase liquid-chromatographic analysis for ten N-methylcarbamate pesticides were optimized with the function of mutual information (FUMI) as a criterion. The chromatograms under various conditions were predicted based on the relationship between the capacity factors and the volume fraction of acetonitrile and methanol that were calculated from the results of twelve conditions. The optimum was defined to be the most precise analysis (the least standard deviation of concentration mesurements), which is indicated by the maximum of FUMI among all of the examined conditions. In the optimization of the mobile-phase composition, the most precise analysis coincided with the minimum time analysis. The analysis time of the optimum chromatogram selected was ca. 30 min, which was the minimum among all of the overlap-free chromatograms examined (RS>1.1). Some influential factors on the information measure FUMI are discussed.
