The authors investigated a method to make adsorption layers of 17, 40 and 100μ in thickness on the surface of aluminum foil. In this method, aluminum foils treated with 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 N sodium hydroxide at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 and 70°C were examined. Optimum condition was the treatment with 2 N sodium hydroxide at 25°C about 3 min. Subsequently, the aluminum foil was subjected to air drying, immersed in about 20% sodium silicate solution, again subjected to air drying, and finally treated with about 5% acetic acid. In this way adsorption layers with uniform film were made up which are not easily peeled off. By this method layers of 1/101/20 thickness as compared with conventional ones were obtained. From aluminum foils of 17, 40 and 100μ, double-face plates having adsorption layers of about 15, 20 and 23 μ thickness were obtained, respectively. The 40μ foil may be useful because it is not crumpled and is so pliable that it can be rolled. Stahl's standard pigments and antipyretics such as aspirine, aminopyrine, antipyrine, quinine ethylcarbonate, quinine hydrochloride, caffeine, sulpyrine, diphenhydramine tannate, pyrabital and phenacetin as samples were developed on the plates (17 × 4 cm). The results showed a satisfactory reproducibility in separations.
