Lead at the μg/g level in straw, chaff and unpolished rice has been determined by polarized Zeeman AAS using a graphite cup furnace. The presence of alkali and alkaline-earth chlorides interferes the determination of lead in plant samples. However, the interference by sample matrix below 1000μg/ml could be eliminated by nitric/fluoric/perchloric acid decomposition together with addition of 1000μg/ml phosphoric acid. The measurement was performed as follows: drying for 15s programed from 80 to 200°C, ashing at 600°C for 30s, atomizing at 1800°C for 20s and cleaning at 2400°C for 3s. The carrier gas was flowed during drying and ashing, but cut off at atomization. All absorbances were measured by the peak integration mode to obtain the peak area of the absorption signal. Influences of the phosphoric acid for matrix effects of calcium chloride and potassium chloride have been examined by the time-dependent profile measurements of lead and background signal. The experimental results indicated that interference caused by chloride could be eliminated by the addition of phosphoric acid, which worked as a matrix modifier. The accuracy of the method was checked by the determination of lead in Citrus Leaves (NBS SRM 1572).
