抄録

It is often observed that some of the spectra for individual components are overlapped in the spectrum measured for a solution containing multi-components. In such cases, it is very difficult to analyze the spectra in terms of discussing the equilibrium relation between each component. By application of a mathematical method, “factor analysis”, it is possible not only to isolate the measured spectrum to the pure spectra based on the individual components, but also to determine their composition profile. Although there are several papers on such application study, the process has not been described in detail. In order to obtain further information on the analytical processes of the factor analysis, absorption spectra of Bromothymol Blue solutions, in which blue and yellow species exist from pH 9.5to 4.5, were measured and the spectra were analyzed by this method. The algorithm of this method requires a selection of “pure points”, the number of which is the same as that of the pure components, and the selection of the pure points is one of the most important process in the analysis. In the case of BTB system, it was found that the composition of the solution, not the wavelength, can be used to select the pure points, because only one species exists in each solution of pH 9.5 or pH4.5, respectively.
