Evaluating the validity of printing Japanese words alongside English text

Abstract

This paper describes an experimental result of validity of printing Japanese words alongside English text. A Copier-like machine produce such a text using OCR technology and estimating parts-of-speech using trigram. Full sentence translation is not possible, but English-Japanese word-to-word translation is easily achieved. The experiments, using 40 TOEIC reading questions, shows that printing Japanese words alongside English text are useful aids for Japanese reading practical English.
